Bio: Mufti Mahmud (Senior Member, IEEE) received the Ph.D. degree in information engineering from the University of Padova, Italy, in 2011. He is currently a Senior Lecturer of computing with Nottingham Trent University, U.K. He has been serving at various positions in the industry and academia in India, Bangladesh, Italy, Belgium, and U.K., since 2003. He is an expert in computational intelligence, applied data analysis, and big data technologies with a keen focus on healthcare applications. He has published over 100 peer-reviewed articles and papers in leading journals and conferences. He is also Senior Member of ACM, a Professional Member of the British Computer Society, and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, U.K. During the year 2020–2021, he has been serving as the Vice Chair of the Intelligent System Application Technical Committee of IEEE Computational Intelligence Society (CIS), a member of the IEEE CIS Task Force on Intelligence Systems for Health and the IEEE R8 Humanitarian Activities Subcommittee, the Publications Chair of the IEEE UK and Ireland Industry Applications Chapter, and a Project Liaison Officer of the IEEE UK and Ireland SIGHT Committee. He was a recipient of the Marie-Curie Postdoctoral Fellowship. He has also been serving as the coordinating Chair of the local organizing committee of the IEEE-WCCI2020; the General Chair of BI2020 and BI2021; and the Program Chair of IEEE-CICARE2020 and IEEE-CICARE2021. He serves as an Associate Editor for Cognitive Computation, IEEE Access, and Big Data Analytics journals, and a Regional Editor (Europe) for Brain Informatics journal.
Abstract: Over the last few years, technological evolution has introduced on the market unprecedented number of devices capable of not only generating but also requesting analysis of large quantities of data. Traditionally, the difficulty in managing these data increased with the need of mining value from them; for this reason, the Big Data world has taken a dominant role within modern information technology. Big Data technology research and development projects have become increasingly common, and consequently, also their application fields have always increased more. The Apache Hadoop and MapReduce are two main technologies that has paved the pathway of modern-day Big Data analytics tools and platforms. This tutorial will introduce these two technologies along with a step-by-step illustration of: Installing a single node Hadoop system in a local computer; and An example of distributed computing using MapReduce.

Nilanjan Dey is an Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Techno International New Town, Kolkata, India. He is a visiting fellow of the University of Reading, UK. He also holds a position of Adjunct Professor at Ton Duc Thang University, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Previously, he held an honorary position of Visiting Scientist at Global Biomedical Technologies Inc., CA, USA (2012–2015). He was awarded his PhD from Jadavpur University in 2015. He is the Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Ambient Computing and Intelligence (IGI Global). He is the Series Co-Editor of Springer Tracts in Nature-Inspired Computing (SpringerNature), Data-Intensive Research(SpringerNature), Advances in Ubiquitous Sensing Applications for Healthcare (Elsevier). He is having 110 books and over 300 publications in the area of medical imaging, machine learning, computer aided diagnosis, data mining, etc. (over 16500 Citations, 63 h-index). Furthermore, he is the Indian Ambassador of the International Federation for Information Processing—Young ICT Group and Senior member of IEEE.

Joarder Kamruzzaman received the BSc and MSc degrees in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology, Dhaka, and the PhD degree in Information Systems Engineering from Muroran Institute of Technology, Hokkaido, Japan in 1993. He has 29 years of tertiary level teaching experience in Australia and Bangladesh. Currently, he is a Professor in the Institute of Innovation, Science and Sustainability, Federation University Australia. Previously, he served Monash University Australia (2004-13) as an Associate Professor and was a full Professor at Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology during 1999-2004. He has taught diverse courses including data communication & networking, wireless and mobile communications, programming, computer security, machine learning, professional development and numerical analysis. His research interests include wireless communications, sensor networks, Internet of Things, machine learning and cybersecurity. He is the founding leader of the sensor networks research group in Monash University in 2007 which now continues in Federation University. He is currently the Direction of a centre (interim) called the Centre for Information Technology and Mathematical Sciences hosted by Federation University Australia. During 2008-2014, he served as the Director of the Centre for Multimedia Computing, Communications and Artificial Intelligence Research hosted first by Monash University and later by Federation University, and as the co-Director of Research, Monash University, Gippsland campus (2009-10). Kamruzzaman has published 279 peer-reviewed publications which include 85 journal papers, 171 fully peer-viewed conferences, 11 book chapters and two edited reference books (see google scholar link for full list). Most of his publications are in the top-ranked journals (40 ranked JCR-Q1) and conferences in his field, including in the highest ranked journal in the whole computer science and electrical engineering domain. He is the recipient of Best Paper award in four international conferences: ICICS’15, Singapore; APCC’14, Thailand; IEEE WCNC’10, Sydney, Australia and in the IEEE-ICNNSP’03, Nanjing, China. He was also awarded Best Researcher award in the Faculty of Science & Technology (2016) and Graduate Research School Award for Excellence in Graduate Research Supervision (2019) in Federation University, and nominated for ‘Teaching Excellence’ award and ‘Postgraduate Supervisor of the Year’ award in Monash University in 2008. His publications are cited over 3400 times and have h-index 26, g-index 47 and i-10 index 73. He has received over A$2.5m competitive research funding, including highly prestigious ARC (Australian Research Council) grant and large CRC (Collaborative Research Centre) grant, and successfully supervised 24 PhDs and 9 Masters to completion. He was the founding Program co-Chair of the first International Symposium on Dependability in Sensor, Cloud, and Big Data Systems and Applications (DependSys), China in 2015. He has served 32 conferences in leadership capacities including Program co-Chair, Publicity Chair, Track Chair and Session Chairs, and since 2012 as an Editor of the Elsevier Journal of Network and Computer Applications (JCR-Q1 ranked), and had served as the lead guest editor of Elsevier Journal Future Generation Computer Systems (Q1 ranked).

After receiving his master degree in Computer Science and Technology from the Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm, Sweden, Karl Andersson started his professional career as a consultant, project manager, business developer, and branch manager within the Capgemini Group. Returning to academia as a PhD Student he obtained his PhD degree after defending his thesis "On Access Network Selection Models and Mobility Support in Heterogeneous Wireless Networks". After visiting Columbia University in the City of New York as a postdoctoral researcher and National Institute of Information and Communications Technology, Tokyo, Japan as a JSPS Fellow, Karl is now Professor in Pervasive and Mobile Computing at Luleå University of Technology (LTU), Skellefteå, Sweden. Since 2017, Karl is leading Centre for Distance-spanning Technology at LTU specialising in research centred around fifth generation mobile networks (5G), Internet of Things (IoT), and datacenters. Karl is currently coordinating a number of projects funded by the EU, VINNOVA, and the Swedish Energy Agency. Since 1 January 2022, Karl is Dean for Faculty of Science and Technology at Luleå University of Technology. Karl is a senior member of the IEEE and a senior member of ACM. He has served as reviewer for a number of journals including IEEE Transactions on Mobile Computing, IEEE Transactions on Computers, IEEE Vehicular Technology Magazine, Computer Networks, Wireless Personal Communications, Wireless Networks, Wireless Communications and Mobile Computing, Journal of Wireless Mobile Networks, Ubiquitous Computing, and Dependable Applications, International Journal of Ad Hoc and Ubiquitous Computing, and ETRI Journal. Furthermore, he has served as reviewer for many conferences including ICC, Globecom, VTC, WCNC, WiMob, IWCMC, and NTMS. Also, he is serving on a number of TPCs and the editorial boards of Journal of Internet Services and Information Security and Journal of Wireless Mobile Networks, Ubiquitous Computing, and Dependable Applications. During 2020 and 2021, Karl was general chair for IEEE Conference on Local Computer Networks (LCN).
